The life and times of
Jesus of Nazareth, from his humble beginnings as a carpenter to his destiny
as the Son of God, are vividly retold in one of the highest-rated mini-series
in the past decade, JESUS, the Emmy-nominated CBS original four-hour
mini-series.
After the death of his
earthly father, Joseph, the simple carpenter Jesus feels abandoned and lonely,
not yet sure of his true calling. But his mother, Mary, tells him how an angel
once told her of her son's birth and of the three Kings who had paid homage
to the newborn baby. Jesus now realizes that the time has come for him to
follow his calling and, with a heavy heart, bids farewell to Mary to dedicate
his life wholly to his great task. Jesus travels to the desert to meditate
and is tempted by Satan, who appears to him in different guises. Satan shows
Jesus all the wrongs future generations will do in his name: wars of religion,
crusades and witch burning. But Jesus refuses to abandon his mission.
Strengthened, he returns
to his people and is baptized by his boyhood friend, John. He collects disciples
through his unprecedented teachings and numerous miracles including turning
water to wine and bringing the dead Lazarus back to life. The Roman governor,
Pontius Pilate, sees Jesus as a threat, and with the help of Jesus' disciple
Judas, persuades the high priest, Caiaphas, to have the Romans arrest Jesus
and put him on trial. In a terrible farce, Jesus is finally sentenced to death
by crucifixion. Most of his followers don't understand why Jesus gives himself
up without any resistance, and they abandon him in his greatest hour of need.
All alone, Jesus must resist Satan's last, and hardest temptation, and complete
his ultimate sacrifice.
Only when he appears,
three days after his death, alive among his disciples do they understand that
through his sacrifice Jesus has given mankind not sorrow and death, but joy
and hope.
JESUS is one of
twelve mini-series produced under "THE BIBLE" umbrella.
